‘Never thought I’d see you again,’ a blond woman in a blue jumpsuit said. She was sitting at a metal table in the middle of what looked like an abandoned warehouse. She was sitting directly across from another woman, brunette, wearing casual jeans, a beige top with a brown jacket over the top.
‘Well, a lot of things have changed the past months. You have, haven’t you?’ the brunette girl asked.
‘Yeah, but that still doesn’t explain why you are here,’ the blonde woman, Meredith, remarked, ‘Spill.’
‘Well, I thought you might be lonely, No ones been allowed to visit you lately, and visiting doesn’t start until tomorrow so I talked to the security outside and got him to let me in, using a bit of, lets just say my charm, eh? Anyway, I’m here to ask you a question.’
‘What is it, Tru?’ Meredith asked.
‘To see if you want to come to my apartment for New Years?’
‘Em…in case you haven’t noticed I’m a little unavailable right now. Maybe you should come back next year when I’m finally over my “drug habit”’
‘No way, I could so get you out for a couple of days. That is…if you want to.’
A smile crept onto Meredith’s face, ‘Yeah, I’d really like that.’
‘I’ll see what I can do,’ Tru said while rising from the seat she was in. ‘Wow that was easier than I thought, now how I am going to get that guard to let us out?’ Tru thought as she walked away from Meredith.
Three hours later, Tru and Meredith were both walking out of the old building. Meredith was now not wearing the jumpsuit she had been wearing earlier, but a slim fitting grey coloured suit coat and trousers, with a white shirt that Tru had brought in for her in case she got out. As she was stepping into the car, she paused and stared out, across the road to a snowy field. Tru peeked out over to the direction Meredith was staring at, ‘Bet you never knew you had that view right outside, eh?’
‘Huh... Wha-‘Meredith replied as if she had just been in some sort of trance.
‘The field?’
‘I guess its ok, not really my kind of thing thought, is it Tru?’ She snapped, ‘So what was the real reason for you coming here today?’
‘What? Can’t a girl come and see her older sister every once and a while?’ Tru smiled.
‘It’s just…it’s just not like you. I mean we never really did get on. Not since you became all weird after mum died,’ she looked at her younger sister, they had always argued, ever since someone had murdered their mum when Tru was 10 years old, Harrison, their brother, was 10, and she, 15. It had always been her and Harrison against Tru, but since last year it had been Tru and Harrison that had been getting along better. She had become too involved in her work, or that was what her siblings had thought up until a few months ago when Meredith had decided to go into rehab to kick her drug habit. Now it seemed as though things were changing between Tru and her.
‘Yeah well, I said things had changed now. You have, and so have I,’ Tru replied.
Meredith sat for the next half hour staring out of the window at the pure, untouched, white snow. She faintly heard a song by Michelle Branch playing on the radio in the car. The name escaped her thoughts at the moment. She tried thinking of the song name but it never came to her and she eventually forgot about the music and slowly drifted off to sleep, her head resting against the window.
‘Meredith? Wake up. C’mon, we’re at my place.’
She jumped up, ‘I’m awake, I’m awake.’
‘Yeah I got that, Tru said, while slowly rubbing her head, ‘and this concussion will heal eventually.’
‘Oh. Sorry Tru. You ok?’
Tru shook her head, ‘I’m fine, it’s cool. C’mon. Harrison is upstairs with Davis.’
‘Ok, I’m coming,’ Meredith said, rising drowsily out of the car. ‘Just give me a minute to wake up.’
The door of Tru’s apartment door opened suddenly, due to it being thrown open by the owner herself, ‘Guess who I have here?’
‘Hey sis,’ Harrison said walking towards Tru, his arms outstretched, ready to hug her.
‘No look who’s behind me,’ Tru hugged him as Meredith appeared in the doorway.
‘Wait, Meredith? You got her out. Go Tru, I knew you would break the law sometime,’ Harrison said as Meredith closed the door. ‘So? What did you do? Pick a lock? Knock out a cop?’
‘No, actually, I flirted with the guard to get in and then again to get us both out. See, I can get things done the legal way, unlike you.’
Both brother and sister stopped when another face entered the room, it was Tru’s boss, Davis, ‘Uh...Meredith…hello again. Haven’t seen you in a while. Where have you been?’ Davis asked awkwardly.
‘Rehab. How’ve you been?’
‘Um…good, good. And you?’
‘Good. Better,’ she replied
‘Ok, good. Uh…Tru, can you work late shift tonight?’
‘Yeah, how? You got a date with Carrie?’ Tru asked playfully.
‘Um…I’m not sure. I will be seeing her. We’re going out to get dinner. But I don’t know if it can be considered a date thought. Do you?’
‘Yeah. She totally digs you,’ Tru replied, comforting Davis. She knew how much he liked Carrie, and she knew that Carrie liked him back, but she couldn’t tell Davis. She thought it was something he should find out himself. ‘Go. Have fun. I’ve got you covered.’
Tru walked through to find Meredith and Harrison catching up and eating everything in the kitchen. Most of the cupboard doors were open and there was loads of food lying on the worktops.
‘So Tru. Are you seeing this guy Jack then?’ Meredith asked.
‘No!’ the water she was drinking almost came out of her nose as she snorted, ‘No way!’
‘Is he single?’ Meredith questioned, sounding eager.
‘Trust me. You do not want to get involved with this guy.’
The double doors leading to the cold slabs of the morgue swung open ‘Got a cold one here.’
‘Mmm, what do we know?’ Tru muffled trying her hardest to swallow the part of sandwich she had in her mouth.
‘Sorry. What?’
Tru swallowed the rest down, ‘What do we know?’
‘Not much. Car crash victim. Died on the scene. Almost instantly. Car was completely crushed. He was thrown from the window. If he hadn’t been, we would have some nice limbs lying on this table here.’
‘Euchh. Nice imagery, Tom. Thanks.’ Tru said, disgusted. ‘Personal belongings?’
‘Wallet in his back pocket, Tom reached into a case and brought out an evidence bag.
‘You checked what’s inside?’
‘Nope. Figured that was the cop’s job. You mind if I leave you here? I got some stuff planned with my wife and daughter.’
‘No. Go. Have a great time,’ Tru said to him, ‘I’m fine here.’
‘Thanks Tru. See you later.’ Tom said as he walked towards the doors.
‘Ok. Let’s see who you are,’ Tru said to herself, ‘Wife’s name: Eliza LeHane. Apartment 10 on 52nd Street. Now, if you’re gonna do it, do it now.’
Nothing happened.
‘Better call your wife then Mr LeHane.’ Tru walked towards the phone in the office and pressed in the numbers that the man kept in his wallet. The phone rang for a couple of minutes before anyone answered, ‘Hello?’ and exhausted voice answered.
‘Yes, hello. This is Tru Davies. Is that Eliza LeHane?’
‘Yes, yes it is, why are you calling here at 12.30?’
‘Actually, I work for the City Morgue. I was wondering if you had a husband.’
‘Yes, why, why are you calling me? What’s happened?’
‘I’m afraid I have some bad news. Your husband has been involved in a car accident. I’m afraid he died on the scene. I was wondering if you would mind coming down here just so we can confirm that it is actually who we think it is.’
‘The other side of the phone was silent.
‘I’ll be there soon,’ and the line went dead.
One hour later, Tru heard the ding of the elevator while on the phone to Meredith, ‘Hey Meredith, I gotta go. Have fun watching the movie. I’ll see you later.’ Tru hung up the phone and walked out into the corridor to meet the deceased mans wife.
‘Hello there, Mrs LeHane. I’m Tru Davies. We talked on the phone.’
‘Yes, can I see him?’
‘Of course. Right this way,’ Tru reached her hand out and gestured toward to double doors which lead to the room in which the woman’s husband was in. Eliza walked slowly, as if disorientated. Tru opened one of the doors to let her into the room, ‘He’s right over here.’ She walked over to one of the slabs on wheels and lifted the sheet to reveal the face of the body. Eliza just whimpered, ‘Oh my God. No. No. It can’t be true.’
‘Tru quickly covered him up, it’s ok, so…is this your husband?’
‘Yes that’s him. That’s Barry.’
‘Ok, that’s all you have to do. You can go home now if you want.’
Tru was walking home when she saw someone getting thrown out of a bar.
‘Hey Lady, you’ve had enough now.’
‘No, I need more. I need more.’
‘No way. Get out of here.’
Tru ran across the street, ‘It’s ok, I’ve got her, I’m a friend. I’ll get her home. Thank you.’
Tru was walking Eliza down the street when she heard a whisper. She looked around and saw no one, there wasn’t even anywhere to hide. No one was around. It was only her and Eliza. No one dead around and that was usually what a whisper meant in her world. Suddenly Tru’s world spun out of reality with her day rewinding itself.
Tru suddenly woke up back in her bed, back on the day she had just lived out, ‘What the hell happened there?’
At the same time, across town, a dark haired man woke up, ‘What was that?’
